Dazzled by the Saharan haze

Trækket på Odden: For the first time since the beginning of the season, I headed to the Odde alone. A few visitors kept me company, but no one stayed very long as the morning was quite quiet, with long periods without any migrating birds at all. Unlike previous days, when the magnificent light made every detail of the birds visible, today’s white light made it complicated to see anything but silhouettes. It seems that the hazy effect in the sky, refracting all the sun light, is due to a cloud of sand from the Sahara. Even the horizon disappeared due to that phenomenon, making the sea and the sky a continuum of a bright light grey.

Despite this difficult background, some great observations were made, making today’s count as enjoyable as usual. If most of the sea birds seemed like black silhouettes floating in the sea/sky, the mostly white plumage of an adult Gannet (Sule) was spotted flying south-west, just before displaying its characteristic and impressive dive. The passerines landing in the bushes were also really great to observe. Some branches seem more attractive than others to those who are still hesitating to fly without turning back. During the morning, a blue tit (Blåmejse), a great tit (Musvit), a yellowhammer (Gulspurv) and a reed bunting (Rørspurv) were seen using the exact same landing stick, taking some time before definitely heading south.

WhatsApp_Image_2026-03-07_at_16.04.00.jpegThe reed bunting (Rørspurv) using the perfect landing branch is the only bird that stayed long enough to be photographed through the telescope.
