A new arrival in a windy day
The ringing: Despite rough winds this morning, the ringers at the station still managed to put up enough nets to reach the minimum standard amount of net meters to ring. The work paid off as a surprising amount of birds were captured and ringed. Despite the harsh weather, 17 new birds were captured today, along with 2 recaptures.
Firescrest (Rødtoppet fuglekonge) seems to be one of the most abundant species in the garden at the moment and has been one of the most commonly captured birds at the station over the last week. Today was no exception with 5 new captures and 2 recaptured individuals.

Trækket på Odden: This cold and windy morning turned out to be a really busy one migration-wise, with 3458 individuals of 33 species migrating despite the strong wind. As it was coming from the south, the birds and especially the Eiders (Ederfugl) were pushed against the coast and seamed to go more northwards than usually. Most of them still didn’t dare to cross the tip over the land and rather took their time to go all the way around.
In addition to the strong wind, we barely saw the sun as it disappeared behind the clouds almost as soon as it rose. By the end of the morning, we even had rain forcing us to take cover under the building for the last hour of the count. Despite that uncertain weather, we still got the chance to make great observations such as an amazing sighting of an adult Gannet (Sule) in full breeding plumage really close to the coast.
Several times throughout the morning, we could see Louis running toward the coast as he heard or saw something interesting. One time he came back with the hugest smile on his face, announcing the passage of a flock not of two or three birds, but of 24 individuals of Woodlarks (Hedelærke), which is the biggest number for this species so far this year.
