Here comes the sun

fredag 27. marts 2026

Trækket på Odden: We had high hopes when we left the station to go do the migration counting this morning. The bad weather from yesterday had cleared up and we enjoyed a lovely morning of sunshine out on the point. The wind was rather cold at times, but it was more than manageable. One downside of the sunny weather was that it made the difference between male and female Eiders (Ederfugl) more difficult to distinguish.

Right from the start of the session it seemed like the nice weather brought along a lot of birds as flock after flock after flock kept showing up in our binoculars. Within just the hour we had already easily surpassed the 1000 mark. Unfortunately however, the numbers of birds coming by did slow down quite significantly after about 2 hours. Flocks became more infrequent and generally smaller. It stayed like this until about the last 1,5 hours, Just as Cyann came to our rescue to relieve is of some of the work. The pace thankfully picked up again and stayed like that and we had a busy end of the morning.

In total, we ended the day with 6256 counted birds, 4787 of which were Eiders. Over the last few days we have noticed that the ratio between male and female Eiders is slowly shifting towards being less male-dominated, with more and more females being present in migrating flocks. Interestingly, beside the Eiders, we saw a significant diversity of species throughout the session as 40 different species were sighted.

Overall, today was a very successful day of migration counting.
