Stormy morning, sunny afternoon

mandag 30. marts 2026

Trækket på Odden: We woke up in a stormy-like weather, with dark clouds, rain, and really strong wind. We then took the decision to wait for better weather before starting today’s count. After 2 hours, the rain calmed down (unlike the wind which stayed quite strong all morning long). We seized our chance and put on some warm layers before heading to the tip, so we could still have 3 hours of migration monitoring today.

It was definitely a good decision, as we counted 2755 individuals of 26 different species. The Eiders (Ederfugl) are still coming in large flocks, and we were quite surprised to see that we eventually counted 2099 of them during the three hours. The Wigeons (Pibeand) were also really numerous, making today's count a record for the species so far this season, with 317 individuals.

We had a lot of discussion about the passerines’ migratory behaviour, struggling against the wind or appearing out of the sudden behind us, unsure if they were heading south and decided to turn back or if they were actually coming from the south. We had the same discussion about an adult male Kestrel (Tårnfalk), who could have been the local one, except for the fact he came from the sea, heading directly north with determination. Based on this behaviour, we concluded it was indeed migrating. As for the local couple, they got disturbed by my return to the station after the count, and flew off the roof to find a quieter place.
