Gedser Fuglestation Blog

Trækket på Odden : Another day at the tip with very low numbers, but days like these are just as important as the ones with thousands of migrants pouring through. It was windy, cold, and somehow the wind managed to pick up even more as the morning went on. The two brilliant photographers Morten Scheller Jensen and Mike Orlander stopped by to say hello, which was really nice.
One moment really stood out, exceptional for Gedser at least. A stunning Great Northern Diver (Islom) in full breeding tuxedo blasted past in a flash. Its massive bill was wide open, maybe trying to cool down, while its huge feet briefly twisted into view, showing off those impressive, webbed toes.
An outstanding sighting, unmistakable ! Picture by Louis A Hansen.
Outside standard count time, two more beautiful species appeared. First came another Eurasian Golden Oriole, a glowing male dressed in pure gold. He barely stayed long enough to take in before vanishing just as quickly as he arrived.
The second highlight was yet another Pallid Harrier, a fine female moving south low over a restless sea, with waves crashing against each other, the shoreline, and the concrete blocks scattered along the coast at Gedser tip.
