Trækket på Odden: We started the day under big clouds, which soon disappeared and left us enjoying the sunrise in the early morning already warm temperatures. The Orioles (Pirol) and the Bee-eater (Gulbug) keep messing with us, teasing us with their melodious calls but staying invisible in the sky. High up in the sky, above our heads, raptors can appear out of nowhere and leave keen birdwatchers puzzled for several minutes as they try to work out the birds' age.
A younger female Marsh Harrier (Circus aeroginosus) in the southbound traffic on Sunday morning, but what about the age? Is it a second calendar year in advanced moult to an adult with many pale underwing coverts? Or is it a third calendar year bird a little behind in moulting? We discussed it in the field, but also asked for opinions in the Facebook Group 'Rovfugle i felten'. It is great and important to have such possibilities. Photo: Ole Friis Larsen/GFU
A young, second calendar year, 2cy, Red Kite (Milvus milvus) heading out for Germany on Sunday morning. During the winter, most Red Kites have changed their plumage to a more adult look with darker breast feathers, and only a few first plumage white markings remaining, but there is still very little contrast between the pinkish rump/undertail coverts and the tail. At the end of the day, a normal amount (for this time of the year) of migrating birds was observed, going in almost all directions: Swifts (Mursejler) to the North, raptors to the South, Mute swans (Knopsvane) to the West and terns (Terne) to the East. The local birds are also part of the scene, and we had several occasions to admire the diversity of the local crows' diet.
Stealing breakfast: The male hybrid Crow (Corvus corone) in a local couple, eating mosquitoes caught in spiders' webs on the building at the point in the early morning. Photo: Ole Friis Larsen/GFU
