The standard ringing today really taught us a lot about how much birds depend on the right weather conditions for migration – especially small birds: while we had many willow warblers (løvsanger) the last two days, we had not a single one today. And that’s probably only because of southerly winds which weren’t even very strong, but if you weigh less than 10 grams, then even a small breeze can blow you off your route, I guess.

So, after seeing all those birds hanging out in our garden and feeding on the berries, today it was very quiet: obviously, they have all left the area. Tomorrow is berry-picking day here, so the birds are smart to get the best berries before the humans come and take them!

The only ones staying now were the ones who still needed to get more fuel for their migration, and the ones that haven’t really finished breeding and still need to be here: we caught several young icterine warblers (gulbug) today and yesterday, that still had their wings growing. Today we caught one that had barely any wings and tail at all, and while in the net it was screaming for its parents, the parents sitting on a tree nearby talking to it too.

Also, we caught a few garden warblers (havesanger), that were still very young.

Apart from that there was not much today, but we again saw many swallows and swifts circling above us, so we will probably try to catch more swallows later today.

And on the last net check, we had a pied flycatcher (broget fluesnapper), which was very pretty and it is the only bird we took a picture of today, because we only caught very common species and forgot to take pictures…

Tomorrow, I have to leave again, because school starts next week, so somebody else will write the blog. So, this is my time to say good-bye. It was a very short and somewhat improvised stay, but I was very grateful for the chance to get to know the third Danish bird observatory. It is cool how they all are different and all have their advantages. I love how the deer and hares just run around here and have somewhat gotten used to the humans. And, of course, I love the terns that you can hear and sometimes see, even from the house. And, naturally, it was great to be here at the best day so far and catch so many birds.
