First feelings at Gedser Fluglestation

I met Anton Liebermann in Ottenby bird Observatory last year. We spent a couple of weeks together there, ringing and bird watching, and he told me a lot of good things about Gedser Fuglestation. My time in Ottenby was great, but after listening Anton speaking about Gedser, I had to come and see Gedser myself.

My first week in Gedser Fuglestation has passed very quickly, learning the station´s work dynamics, doing some bird watching at the southernmost point in Denmark, going for runs along the beach, going into the sea, looking for migratory butterflies and of course, ringing every day! Also, I already feel very comfortable here and that´s because Hans Lind and Anton are treating me too well! I feel like if I was at home, I feel very lucky. Thanks!

Although the reward of ringing and being outdoor is great, it is very energy demanding, the lack of sleep is especially tough… if you want to get eight hours of sleep, you need to go to bed at 20:00… but it´s not so easy to achieve this because we are too excited with the beginning of the season! it´s always a surprise what we may find in the nets the next day. Also, this first week it has being very hot and that makes everything a bit more tiring, even for me that I am from South Spain. So today, Anton is having a good siesta to recover from the extra effort of being answering my endless questions about data entry, improving extraction methods, ageing birds, the Danish name of the birds, etc. Thanks again y duerme bien acho!

Bird wise it´s being amazing so far! We have ringed  Marsh Tit (who is not very common here), a few Short-toed Treecreepers and many acrocephalus warblers, who are always a challenge to id!

I am looking forward to keep on learning and feeling first hand the bird migration!

De gladeste hilsner, Ramón.
