The garden is still rather empty

tirsdag 15. maj 2018
af Robert Luttik

Today 23 birds caught in six and a half hour (17 new and 6 recaptures). We needed some birds because the Fuglestation was visted by a group of people. Luckely we could show them some birds. The group was taken care by the three boys: Hans, Gert and Benny and Dina and I had to provide them with the ones to show.

Early in the morning we caught the third Nattergal/Thrush Nightingale of the year. The other species were the normal ones for the time of the year.

Tomorrow the last day for Dina and me, lets hope it will be an exciting one.

The garden is empty

mandag 14. maj 2018
af Robert Luttik

Hardly any new birds, most of the old ones are gone or do know where the nets are standing. We caught only 14 birds today (nine new and 5 recaptures). The garden looks empty, some birds singing but no birds flying around.

There was one very beautifull bird. Again a Karmindompap/Common Rosefinch, but this time a male (nicely red). Was also one of the last birds we caught.

A grey start of the day and a little surprise at the end of the morning

søndag 13. maj 2018
af Robert Luttik

The day started with fog and there were hardly any birds flying. First round we had no birds second round 1 and in the third round 2. In total we caught 20 birds (14 new ones and 6 recaptures). Nets were open till 15.00 hours. So not much work. At the end of the morning we were surprised when a Karmindompap was flying into the net. It was a second year female. It is not a real rare bird, but nevertheless it was the first of the season. Further there is hardly anything to tell.

Although, we had a roe deer in the garden and luckely not in the nets. A White-tailed Eagle was sitting in the field a little bit in the direction of Gedser and a Crane was flying over.

Late addition. Caught at little lake one Engpiber/Meadow Pipit, so total is now 21.

Hope tomorrow will bring more birds.

Nice quiet day, a little bit more than average

lørdag 12. maj 2018
af Robert Luttik

As expected we have caught less than yesterday. Often new birds arrive after a weather change and than the next day you will catch less and the day after even more less. Lets hope the rule is not always true. We had in total 80 birds (70 new ones and 10 recaptures) and in total 20 different species. Once again we had a little Rødtoppet Fuglekonge/Firecrest (number 65 for this year) and the third Rødrygget Tornskade/Red-backed Shrike for 2018. The Willow Warbler was the main attraction of  the day, in total 27 birds.

But there was one bird that made me really happy, I had my first Nattergal/Thrush Nightingale in the hand (see picture). You would perhaps think how is that possible that he has never had a Nattergal in his hand. I just did not catch one in Denmark and in the Netherlands the Thrush Nightingale is a more rare species and I was just never lucky. Clausjannic saw the bird hanging in the net and he called me. He did know that I had never caught this species and was so friendly to give me the honors.

Two times the Nattergal/Thrush Nightingale, a happy ringer and one Tornirisk/Linnet just because it is such a nice bird.

More than average day, it sure was!!!

fredag 11. maj 2018

Net open at 4.30. And hoping that our prediction would be right (mine and Hans Lind). After a weather change very often new birds will arrive. First round was not much just a few normal birds (5). But the second round was already much better and it kept going on. We closed the nets at 16.00 hours and that wwas a lucky decision too. In total we caught 135 birds (122 new and 13 recaptures). We had 21 species which I think is rather a lot.

It was a Løvsanger/Willow Warbler day in total 74 different birds. Second bird of the day was The Tornsanger/Whitethroat with 20 individuals. We also caught the first two Rødrygget Tornskad/Red-backed Shrikes of the year. But the most interesting bird was the Pirol/Golden Oriole, for me a new hand species.

We also had two intersting recaptures: a Guluig/Icterine Warbler caught in Gedser in 2014 and a Tornsanger(Whitethroat also caught in Gedser in 2014.

All in all a very nice day and when we would have stopped ringing around noon we would have missed the Pirol and the second Rødrygget Tornskade.

The day was very good and I am extremely tired.

Nice average spring day

torsdag 10. maj 2018
af Robert Luttik

Today I had some help of an Egyptian lady: Dina Mostafa. She will stay for a week and will try to learn the job here, getting birds out of the net and do the ringing. We placed the sparrowhawk net, although I have not seen any, but you never know. We replaced another net and tried to catch a skylark but it would not fly into the spejnet. We probably have to use a wooshnet for that species. The station has one I believe, but it has not been used till now.

We had a nice day, sunny and in total 34 birds (27 new and 7 recaptures). We caught the first two Gulbug/Icterine Warblers of the year and had the second Skovpiber/Tree Pipit. And a species for which I am very carefull not to present any finger to the bird, we had 3 Kernebider/Hawfiches. It was also a day with many species in total 16 different ones, which is compared with the total number of birds rather high.

"Dream Team" gone, Dream Species arrive

onsdag 9. maj 2018
af Robert Luttik

In the first round only four birds (four species): a willow warbler/løvsanger, a wren/gærdesmutte, a dunnock/jernspurv and a special one.

This weekend I decided to come the day before I was expected, which was yesterday. The fuglestation was closed for two days and I thought it was a good idea to catch already early this morning instead of tomorrow. Lucky decision I made, which resulted in a special catch. A river warbler/flodsanger, a new hand species for me.

It is as far as I could discover 10 times caught in Gedser (see figure). It is a real spring early summer species: 2 times in May, 5 times in June, 2 times in July and 1 time in August.

Desværre ingen mærkning i dag

Farvel for denne gang
